Enhancing NICU Screening Success: A Scenario-Based Training to Improve Timeliness, Collaboration, and Confidence
Newborn hearing screening in the NICU presents unique challenges that require specialized knowledge, coordination, and consistency. To address these needs, we developed a targeted training module designed to equip screeners with the confidence, procedures, and collaborative strategies necessary to manage NICU screenings effectively. This interactive training, based on JCIH guidelines, features animated scenarios that follow a screener as they round in the NICU, engaging with nursing staff to assess infant eligibility and prioritize screenings before discharge. Through realistic dialogue and decision-making moments, participants learn to reduce delays, prevent missed screenings, and uphold quality care standards. This session will share the development process, implementation outcomes, and feedback from participants, highlighting how scenario-based learning can transform NICU screening practices.
- Describe the procedures and considerations unique to conducting newborn hearing screenings in the NICU setting.
- Demonstrate effective communication strategies for collaborating with NICU staff to identify and prioritize eligible infants for screening prior to discharge. Apply scenario-based decision-making to reduce delays and prevent missed screenings through timely and consistent practices.
- Evaluate animated training scenarios to reinforce confidence and competence in managing NICU screenings.
