The Benefits of an Effective Early Intervention Infant/Toddler Parent Program: From a Listening and Spoken Language Perspective

The Listening and Spoken Language approach is an early intervention method designed for caregivers who have chosen to amplify their children via hearing aids, cochlear implants, bone conduction etc. to give the brain access to sound. With ample access to sound, the brain develops pathways through listening and in return spoken language is produced. The Listening and Spoken Language approach identifies parents/caregivers as being the first teachers for their little ones. Given this Listening and Spoken Language approach, professionals guide and coach family members by giving them tools to help their child succeed in the developmental areas of auditory, speech and language. Although it is widely acknowledged that there is plethora of evidence-based research on the topic of parent involvement, parent coaching, and early intervention from a widespread broad audience i.e. child development, developmental delays etc. there is little known on this topic in a group setting from a Listening and Spoken Language perspective. Little Listeners, an early intervention parent program at Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech is a free in-person opportunity where parents are guided and coached on Listening and Spoken Language strategies. Each week, Little Listeners highlight a Listening and Language strategy tip along with demonstration. The group also covers topics such as developmental milestones and auditory goals along with what they can do at home with their children. This research study will aim to address the following two questions: What is an effective early intervention (LSLS) group? What are the benefits of an effective early intervention infant/toddler parent (LSLS) group?

  • List key components that contribute to an effective early intervention LSL (Listening and Spoken Language) parent group (e.g., session structure, coaching strategies, family engagement, developmental targets).
  • List the benefits of implementing LSL (Listening and Spoken Language)group intervention for infants and toddlers, including social-emotional and parent confidence outcomes.
  • Perform the planning process for developing an effective LSLS group session by integrating auditory, speech, and language learning goals with caregiver coaching strategies.

Aisha Doggette is an Early Interventionist Teacher of the Deaf at Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech in Jacksonville, Fl. Aisha, an aspiring Listening and Spoken Language Specialist began her journey almost 15 years ago when she took her first aural rehab class. Aisha completed her bachelor of arts in Communication Sciences and disorders from Wayne State University in 2011. Following graduation, Aisha stumbled upon the auditory-oral teacher of the deaf program at Eastern Michigan University. Aisha competed her master’s of arts in hearing impairment special eduation from Eastern Michigan University in 2016 and then later completed her second master’s in early childhood education in 2018. Aisha took her first job in 2016 as the preschool/pre-k auditory oral educator at Trenton Schools for Hearing and Speech in Trenton, Michigan. In 2018, She and her husband moved to Jacksonville, Fl. Aisha began teaching the fun three year olds. During COVID in 2020, Aisha saw the need of parent education. With almost 10 years of deaf educator teaching experience, Aisha is still growing more passionate about parent-child education. Aisha currently serves as the instructor of the Early Intervention Little Listeners Program at Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech. This free, in-person program provides parents with guided coaching in Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) strategies. Each week, Little Listeners highlights a specific listening and language strategy through demonstration and parent practice. Sessions also explore topics such as developmental milestones, auditory goals, and ways families can support their child’s progress at home. In addition to her in-person work, Aisha also provides virtual coaching and teletherapy, extending family-centered support to caregivers in various settings. Aisha is a wife and mother to Callee, a joyful four-year-old, and is currently expecting her second child. She believes that her own parenting journey deeply enriches her professional practice, allowing her to connect authentically with families and offer meaningful, experience-based guidance.
