Using a Language Simulation to Teach Techniques for Language Learning

Comprehending what it’s like for a child with hearing loss to understand and learn language is a complicated concept. This presentation will begin with an explanation of the modeling-imitation technique that is used to accelerate language acquisition and will include a language simulation experience allowing the participants to experience similar feelings, successes, and failures to children who are in the early stages of language development. Participants will engage in learning an unfamiliar language, similar to how language may be taught through caregiver coaching sessions or during individual therapy for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Through an interactive presentation, participants will have the opportunity to experience firsthand what it’s like to try to understand an unfamiliar language. Strategies for enhancing communication will be experienced, explained, and reviewed. Techniques for accelerating language acquisition will be demonstrated and discussed. This presentation is truly a chance for parents, other caregivers, and professionals to walk in the shoes of the child. Information in this presentation is meaningful whether using spoken language or sign language.

  • The participant will be able to list at least two techniques that encourage language learning, whether using spoken language or sign language.
  • The participant will be able to describe the modeling-imitation technique.
  • The participant will be able to explain at least two adult behaviors that discourage engagement in language learning.
