Coaching Caregivers in Early Intervention LSL Practice: Identifying Barriers and Solutions
Research has found that better listening and spoken language outcomes were directly associated with the following factors: age of amplification, frequent use of amplification, use of listening and spoken language as the primary communication modality, caregivers’ frequent use of rich vocabulary sentence structure in conversation (Detman et al, 2016). It is essential that family-centered practice be provided to children with hearing loss to equip caregivers with strategies and to promote auditory access and listening and spoken language in the home. This presentation will give practical tools in LSL early intervention parent coaching. It will also discuss barriers unrelated to hearing loss that can impact a child’s progress and parents’ capacity to follow recommendations. Further, the presentation will describe continual assessment of a family’s needs and adjustment of services to meet those needs.
- Participants will name at least 3 parent coaching tools to use in their early intervention LSL practice
- Participants will identify 2 barriers that can affect parental engagement in audiology appointments and early LSL intervention.
- Participants will name 2 tools to assess a family’s needs and strategies to help parents meet those needs.
